In an effort to continue
to advance our youth and focus on early childhood literacy, the United
Way of the Coastal Empire is partnering with the Savannah Rotary
Clubs and the SCCPSS to help provide one-on-one
mentoring to the 2nd graders at our local public schools. Though a
year-long commitment for our volunteers is required, the time is minimal. Each
volunteer is requested to sit with the assigned student for just one hour twice
a week to help build that relationship, understand their needs, and help to
develop their reading skills.
The evidence-based,
leveled reading program advances students’ reading ability by focusing on
phonics, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, and reading instruction-phonemic
awareness.
A few notes:
For each school, twenty
second-grade students receive one-on-one reading tutoring to support
reading proficiency by the end of the third grade and beyond.
Trained volunteers (aka Read
United Buddies) commit to working with students twice weekly for one
hour throughout the school year.
****Exact days and
times will be determined soon. Stay tuned!****
Each school requires up to 20 volunteers to support the
weekly Read United Buddies program. You are welcome to partner with a friend to
help share the weekly commitment. In addition, we welcome an unlimited number of
Backup Buddies, who are willing to step in when a regularly scheduled Buddy is
unavailable.
