Read United 2023
What is Read United? Read United is United Way of the Coastal Empire’s programmatic response to the promotion of Early Childhood Literacy in our region.
Read United Day is the hallmark event, an initiative that seeks to place books in the home of every child in Pre-K through second grade in our region. The program focuses on children in these lower grade levels because we recognize that an early response to the literacy gap that exists in homes of many low-income households can enable children in these homes to succeed.
Read United Day will occur across our region on a single day. This kick-off event will place community leaders and volunteers in classrooms to read to over 19,000 children across our four-county footprint in Pre-K through 2nd Grades. Students will also receive their own books to take home with them during this event to promote literacy nutrition in the home.
You too can help provide these books by donating now. Just $5 can supply one child with a book or you can sponsor a classroom for $100.
HOW CAN I VOLUNTEER TO HELP?
Over 900 volunteers are needed to support this initiative. Volunteers are asked to sign up for a time slot at the school of their choosing which will entail reading a book to an assigned classroom.
*All books are provided, we just need the readers!*
Here's what to expect:
- Volunteer signs up for time slot
- United Way team will send a confirmation e-mail with details to include: time, location, classroom, teacher's name, etc..(plus any other details!)
- Upon arrival to the school, you will receive a United Way Volunteers lanyard and a bag of books for your classroom. That bag will have a hardback book for the volunteer to read (and then leave with the teacher) and enough paperback books for the kids.
- Read and entertain the classroom and once completed, the volunteer will then distribute the books to the kids.
