Needs From: United Way Volunteers

Volunteer: Auditory/Verbal Program Volunteers Appreciated

Since 1954, Savannah Speech & Hearing Center has served our community with a mission to provide access to services that empower and transform lives of both children and adults, regardless of their financial means.

We offer speech and hearing services for all ages, pediatric occupational and physical therapy, a weekly stroke survivor support group and since 2007, Sound Start.

Sound Start provides intensive instruction for children with cochlear implants or hearing aids, teaching them to make full use of their listening technology and develop spoken language skills. Our goal is for these children to successfully transition into mainstream elementary classrooms. It is a life-changing program for both the children and their families.

Volunteers are appreciated in helping read stories, in arts & crafts projects and in general, immersing our kids in spoken language.

Volunteers are currently needed from 9:30am until  2pm, Monday through Friday. Any availability of at least 2 hours is appreciated! A background check and signing of a HIPAA and nondisclosure agreement is required. Please note, Sound Start's classrooms are only accessible by stairs.

See more about the program here.

Watch videos of Sound Start here.

Please reach out to Jenna Harcher at info@speechandhearingsav.org or by calling 912.355.4601 ext 132 for more information.

Thank you for considering and for spreading the word!

Volunteer: Community Hearing Screening Volunteers Needed

Savannah Speech & Hearing has offered free hearing screenings to our community since 1954.

Hearing screenings are essential to identifying hearing loss and ensuring that it be properly addressed.

Join us in offering these simple screenings in our local schools. We cannot do it without the help of volunteers!

Screenings are conducted with simple, portable audiometers. The use of these audiometers is explained in a quick training in person and/or with this video: https://youtu.be/H339wd9XuoY. Screenings are done Monday through Thursday mornings from August - November at public and private schools throughout Chatham County. Volunteer one day or several - all help is appreciated! All screenings are arranged and supervised by staff of the Savannah Speech & Hearing Center - you will not be on your own!

Prior to assignment, a no cost mandatory background check will be done. Additional information may be requested.
