In a year of social distance and isolation, the outdoors have been a welcomed respite from our indoor lives. Our public green spaces have offered a way for us to breathe a little easier in these anxious times. Now, it's time to say thank you to the trees that shade our public spaces and clean our air.
For Georgia Arbor Day in February 2021, Savannah Tree Foundation will plant 100 trees in parks and recreational spaces across all nine municipalities in Chatham County. Sites include parks in Bloomingdale, unincorporated Chatham County, Garden City, Pooler, Port Wentworth, Savannah, Thunderbolt, Tybee Island, and Vernonburg. We are working with local governments in each municipality to plant 5-20 trees to best meet the needs of each site, from stormwater management to beautification.
Overall, these trees will provide shade to those enjoying the parks, clean and cool the air to ensure a healthy outdoor environment, and bring together the community for a fun outdoor event after a difficult year of social distancing. By planting in public spaces across the County, we will ensure that all community members benefit from the trees planted, no matter their socioeconomic status or geographic location. These trees will allow future generations to continue to enjoy our public green spaces. We will “plant it forward.”
