Who We Are

Coastal Heritage Society is a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation founded in 1975 which operates the following historical sites:

Georgia State Railroad Museum is a historic site featuring the most complete antebellum railroad buildings of its kind in the world and is located at the old Central of Georgia Railway Savannah Shops and Terminal Facilities in downtown Savannah. The museum gives visitors the opportunity to engage in interactive experiences, such as participating on the handcar, touring the historic rail cars and taking a guided site tour by train which showcases our museum's fully operational turntable.

Savannah Children's Museum was unveiled in 2012 as an adaptive reuse project in old Central of Georgia Railway Carpentry Shop in downtown Savannah. The entirely outdoor museum features over a dozen exhibits designed to expand the imaginations of children, including an exploration maze, a reading nook and a sensory garden.

Savannah History Museum is located in the former historic Central of Georgia Railroad's passenger station. The museum walks guests through the city's history from 1733, spanning the American Revolution and Civil War, all the way to modern day Savannah. Many exhibits highlight Savannah's musical, cultural and artistic contributions including the famous bench from Forrest Gump

Old Fort Jackson is a 208-year-old landmark and Georgia's oldest standing brick fort. The site offers exciting interactive programs about life as a soldier for adults, kids and families. Guests can also learn various drills and forms of military communication used and watch a cannon demonstration using some of the oldest artillery in the Southeast.

Pin Point Heritage Museum is located in the former A.S. Varn & Son Oyster and Crab Factory. The community was founded in 1896 by freed slaves after the Civil War. The former factory has been transformed into an educational center for visitors to authentically learn about the Gullah/Geechee culture directly from residents who grew up in the small, close-knit community. Guests can discover these unique life ways, from daily life to religion, language and food.

What We Do

It is the mission of Coastal Heritage Society to preserve the cultural and natural heritage of the coastal area and provide a sense of awareness and pride in that heritage through programs of active public involvement.
