Program: The horticulture/landscape training program trains adults with developmental disabilities for careers in a variety of agricultural professions, such as working in a plant nursery, garden department, or on a landscape or grounds crew. Trainees learn a wide variety of tasks, including: how to clear a raised bed for planting; how to weed; plant seeds or seedlings; proper plant care for a variety of plants, shrubs, and trees; when and how to harvest fruits and vegetables; and how to operate a variety of tools and garden-related equipment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with the planting, weeding, watering, maintenance, and harvesting of the garden.
- Assist staff in supervising individuals in the garden. Acting as an extra set of eyes, ears, and hands with the trainees, allowing staff to handle any medical or personal needs of a trainee.
- Socialize with trainees, initiating and maintaining conversation.
- Engage and direct trainees in one-on-one interactions and individual activities when appropriate.
- Inform staff when trainees need assistance or support.
