Saturday, March 25, 2023, from 9 am-3 pm
Savannah Technical College at 5717 White Bluff Rd in Savannah, GA 31405
Volunteer Registration Deadline: Monday, March 13
In collaboration with Step Up Savannah, the United Way Community Investments department will host a Poverty Simulation. The Poverty Simulation is a unique tool that helps people understand what life is like with a shortage of money and an abundance of stress.
The simulation lets participants view poverty from different angles and then discuss the barriers to access within our community. The simulation sensitizes those who frequently deal with low-income families and creates a broader awareness among this year's Community Investments participants.
During the simulation, individuals, (Community Investments participants) role-play the lives of low-income families. The task of each family is to provide food, shelter, and other necessities during an allotted amount of time. Families interact with community resources (Poverty Simulation volunteers).
Poverty Simulation Volunteers must stay throughout the Poverty Simulation (9 am-3 pm). Lunch will be provided.
Volunteers are expected to attend a brief orientation a week before the day of the Poverty Simulation.
Virtual Volunteer Orientation: Wednesday, March 15 from noon-1:30PM
Volunteer Orientation includes:
- The Simulation Experience
- Staffer Responsibilities
- Staffer Roles
- Role Assignments (pre-assigned)
- Role Challenges
- Floor Plan
